All 15 issues of IPC’s Scream! now online

by Ghastly McNasty

On 24th March 1984 Scream! hit the shelves of newsagents around the world. The fantastic stories within its pages had a generation of comic loving kids shaking in their shoes in a way they had never experienced before. Then, after only 15 issues, Scream! mysteriously ended. Rumours of strikes at IPC Magazines, the comic’s creators, could have been the cause. Declining comic sales in the UK another. Possibly the grizzly nature of Scream! caused hordes of desperate mothers to get the comic banned. Who knows? Maybe a darker mystery lies at the heart of this puzzle, a bizarre twist that no one has the answer to.

In 2001 backfromthedepths.co.uk was created to keep the memory of this much loved comic alive and to bring Scream fans together. Originally the site included a selection of the juiciest most horrible stories. Now, a recent update means you can read all 15 issues of Scream! online.

Scream

Scream survived as part of the Eagle masthead until March 85 then it was dropped for ever. Scream did emerge for 5 holiday specials. Check them out in the cover art section.

Visit the extensive Scream! gallery on Back from the Depths to read all 15 issues. You can also read the entire of The Thirteenth Floor and Monster as they appeared in Scream! along with a whole load of other creepy comic tales.

To get you in the mood for Scream we’ve included the classic Scream! story Sea Beast in the gallery below…

I loved these comics. And my Dad would let me buy them with my pocket money in the newsagent after he took us swimming. My mother hated them. And one day she threw my whole collection away when I was at school. Absolutely gutted.

Had every issue apart from number one. Was gutted when it ended and as a little boy, didnt understand why. Happy days.

In 2016, Egmont UK sold its ownership of the remaining IPC titles it had acquired from IPC/Fleetway. Originally, Egmont had owned every IPC character created after 1970. Because ‘Scream’ is a 1980s title, Egmont’s ownership would have included all the strips published in it. The new rights holder is Rebellion.

I had all 15 magazines in the 80’s growing up, I managed to salvage half of them from the loft of my parents house i’ve since managed to complete the collection of all 15 and the special editions. it’s great to know someone loved these magazines as much as i did. iv’e thought about creating my own PDF versions but this online presentation is much easier. maybe i’ll get round to creating my own to save me getting them out and risk damaging them.

I just found the whole 15 comics while clearing my attic. Does anyone know if they are worth anything?

I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to find this website! I loved this comic, and had every issue except the first. So many wonderful (and unsavoury) memories.
There is even a letter I wrote to Ghastly printed in the letters page of issue 14. I never thought I’d see that again!

I think It was this comic I and my brother sister read back then. I would have been 5, with a 9 year old older brother, and 12 year old sister. Im sure we even bought multiple copies when they had free gifts.
