Absolutely blown away and drooling in anticpation at this gorgeous trailer for the live-action version of Japanese manga smash-hit Attack on Titan. Launched in 2009, AoT now towers at 17 volumes and spawned a highly successful anime adaptation. A bonkers storyline; set in a world where humanity lives inside cities surrounded by enormous walls as a defense against the Titans, gigantic humanoid creatures that eat humans seemingly without reason, AoT never holds back on the gore and has no problem killing off main characters in gruesome ways.
The first live-action film, titled simply “Attack on Titan,” opened Aug. 1 as the top film in the Japanese box office, earning about $4.8 million. The second film “Attack on Titan: End of the World”, opens Sept. 19 in Japan. I can highly recommend the anime series if you like your cartoon drama but this live action version…phew. Just check out the trailer for yourself.
Attack on Titan has revitalized manga publishing both in Japan and the US. The English-language edition of Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan manga has 2.5 million copies in circulation. The English version has 15 volumes in print, whereas the original Japanese version’s first 15 volumes had 44 million copies as of April. As of July 18, the manga’s first volume has spent 107 weeks on the New York Times manga bestseller list.
