The Stand: Captain Trips

by Ghastly McNasty

The Stand: Captain Trips

I’m currently half way through re-watching the tv/film version of Stephen King’s The Stand so I was dead chuffed to discover that this brilliant story is getting the comic book treatment from Marvel Comics.

Arguably King’s greatest novel The Stand tells the tale of the survivors of an apocalyptic virus that wipes out 99.99% of the world’s population. Of course there are some weird goings on thrown in the mix as well as the last of the humans gravitate towards good or evil…read it for yourselves if you haven’t already as both book and TV mini series are well worth it.

This new comic adaptation seems to have been positively received by all fans (The image above is actually of the 2nd print run as the first sold out fairly quickly) and it’s also Marvel’s second adaptation of some of Stephen King’s work, so they seem to know what they are doing.

Now The Stand is actually a beast of a book, over 1000 pages, and the tv film is 6 hours long! The comic version will be 30 issues long and told in a series of mini arcs, the first being The Stand: Captain Trips #1-5. Captain Trips will tell the story of the initial release of the virus and its effect on the world. The artwork by Mike Perkins looks promising and writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa seems keen on being faithful to the original material. Could very well be worth a purchase!

Worth a shot. I read the novel back in Uni in maybe ’92 or ’93 and loved it.

I never read the book nor seen the movie. So I bought the first issue and I liked it. It was very graphic. I got real curious about the novel, that I bought the novel. Over 1000 pages long. Definitely not portable!

It would be interesting if they ever do a comic book series of The Shining or Salem’s Lot.

BTW, that fourth image where the man motions you to come forward or something. I sooner run the other direction.
